Risk Management Pilot Program Extended |

The province is supporting its grain and oilseed producers by temporarily extending the sectors Risk Management Program (RMP) pilot for the 2010 crop year. The program helps farmers offset losses caused by low grain and oilseed commodity prices.

OFA welcomes Mitchell as new Ontario ag minister |

GUELPH – Premier McGuinty has named Carol Mitchell of the Huron-Bruce riding as Ontario’s new Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. She takes over from Leona Dombrowsky who held the position since 2005.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with Minister Mitchell,” says Bette Jean Crews, President of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA). “OFA has enjoyed a good working relationship with Minister Dombrowsky, and looks forward to continuing along the same route with Minister Mitchell.” |

GUELPH – The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) and the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario (CFFO) appreciate the work of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) in securing the fee increase requested through the Farm Business Registration process for Ontario’s General Farm Organizations (GFO).

Ontario's Harmonized tax-Implications for Farming |
|
Ontario’s proposed HST is a collaboration in sales tax collection between the federal and provincial governments. The combined PST and GST taxes will results in a single collection, making tax administration less costly to government and making tax accounting simpler and less costly for businesses.
The net impact of HST on consumers and businesses is dependent on the rules around its application.
The OFA immediately began working with the government as the HST was rumored to secure beneficial treatment of farm businesses within the new HST rules.

Working to realize goal of new mission statement |

GUELPH – Delegates to the 2007 convention of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) gave their approval to a new mission statement for the organization – “The Ontario Federation of Agriculture will work collaboratively towards a profitable, sustainable future for Ontario farmers.”
Acclaimed OFA president for a second term, Geri Kamenz, said it is time Ontario farmers revise their thinking about the word profit – it is not a bad word. “Profits pay taxes, profits put our children through schools and universities, and profits build strong rural communities.

OFEC Going to Environment Minister over SWP Committee |
|
The Ontario Farm Environmental Coalition is going to the top of the ladder -- trying to get elected farmers onto two Source Water Protection Committees.
John Fitzgibbon says they are going to Environment Minister John Gerretsen - to try and get one farmer from Huron, and two from Eastern Ontario onto their local committees. |
