WFA meets with local MPPs to discuss Agriculture Sustainability Coalition

The WFA recently met with Ted Arnott, MPP Wellington Halton Hills and Liz Sandals MPP Guelph to represent the Agriculture Sustainability Coalition, and the urgent problems that Wellington Farmers are currently facing. The coalition also met with John Wilkinson, MPP for Perth Wellington.

The MPPs were all very responsive to the dire situation that the pork and beef sectors are currently in, and the terribly poor growing conditions that were thrust upon Wellington County this year.

Culinary Tourism Assets List

As part of a Culinary Tourism Regional Planning project, the Wellington Waterloo Community Futures Development Corporation is trying to identify farms within Puslinch, Mapleton, Guelph Eramosa and Erin who sell their products but do not wish to be on a map, and do not wish to have people coming to their farms to purchase their product.

Wellington North Exempts Agriculture from Development Charges

At the May 11th meeting of Wellington North Council, the development charges bylaw was officially amended to exempt agriculture. Thanks to Council for listening to our concerns, and a special thanks to all of the farmers that helped, Wellington County Cattlemen, Wellington NFU, and the Wellington Christian Farmers Association. Without the cooperation of everyone, we might not have been as effective. Download our letter to the editor to appear in Wellington Advertiser, Ontario Farmer and Mount Forest Confederate.

WFA applauds potential new marketing venture for Wellington Farmers

Recently a group of Centre Wellington stakeholders received funding to encourage culinary tourism in the area. The staff of Elora & Fergus Tourism will seek to encourage visitors to the area by marketing the region as a culinary destination. Various restaurants and bed and breakfast establishments, as well as other businesses throughout the area are enthusiastically committed to the project. It will bring together this sector with our vibrant local agriculture, in the hopes of marketing local products. This effort can showcase and promote the diverse selection of products grown, and readily available in our area.

Fergus OMAFRA office has a new location

The “Fergus Resource Centre” hosts a cluster of OMAFRA staff, currently housed on County of Wellington grounds at Wellington Place between Fergus & Elora. As you may have heard, the lease with the County will expire on March 31, 2009. At that time, the ministry’s resource centre will be located at: 6484 Wellington Road #7, Elora. OMAFRA services will not change. All of the services currently provided by OMAFRA at the Wellington Place location will be available at the new “Elora Resource Centre”.

 
 
Wellington Federation of Agriculture Elects New President

The WFA held its annual meeting and banquet on Friday November 7th, 2008. After 2 years as president, Gary Nelson stepped down. David Parker, of RR#4 Belwood was acclaimed as President. 1st Vice President will be Ryan Koeslag of RR#3 Clifford, and 2nd Vice President is now Steve Dineen , RR#1 Kenilworth.

Among the highlights of the evening were a speech from Wendy Omvlee who is running for OFA Vice President, introduction of Mark Reusser as the new Waterloo, Wellington, Dufferin Director, and the honouring of Laura Austin , the 2007/2008 Ray Baptie Scholarship Recipient.

Arnott named assistant speaker in Queen's Park

Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott will have to settle for being an assistant Speaker in the Liberal-dominated Queen's Park.

Last week, the 17-year MPP lost out on his second bid to serve as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

Arnott was one of five candidates running for Speaker and he survived until the third ballot, but lost out to Liberal MPP Steve Peters. Yesterday, Arnott was named assistant speaker.

Arnott will be one of the presiding officers of the Legislative Assembly, who will enforce the rules of the House when Peters is not present.

 
Risk Management Pilot Program Extended

The province is supporting its grain and oilseed producers by temporarily extending the sectors Risk Management Program (RMP) pilot for the 2010 crop year. The program helps farmers offset losses caused by low grain and oilseed commodity prices.
